Mahomet Cemetery
Mahomet Cemetery Association Tree Project
Last winter an arborist (Don Gardner) was consulted regarding the tree in the cemetery. His recommendation resulted in the removal and/or trimming of about 8 trees, for which the Board approved a $1600 expenditure. He also advised on tree species and planting guidelines that would maximize our success with new trees. Seven trees have been planted, six Chinquapin Oaks on the north side of the old section, and Bur Oak on the east side. Additional tree would greatly enhance our cemetery and desired locations are indicated with green tipped stakes. Everyone is encouraged to join this beautification effort by planting a tree and/or donating $225 to The Tree Fund and a 15 gal tree will be planted (multiple trees or donation gladly accepted).
Mr. Gardner advised that no Live Oaks should be planted until 2025 to ensure that no continuing oak wilt can threaten the cemetery.
Planting Guidelines:
-
Planting of trees except at designated locations requires MCA Board approval.
-
Trees should be 15 gal.
-
Holes should be about twice the diameter of the container (aprox. 36") and about 12"deep.
-
Dirt from the hole should be used to build a berm (about 60") diameter and the hole filled with garden soil, after the tree is in place, firmly packed up to original grade, then compost filled to top of berm.
A volunteer (Rodney Smith, 512-773-6410) has agreed to water the trees as required, using water generously donated by the Mahomet Church.
How to get started?
-
Indicate the type of tree you would like and the location/placement of the tree, and fill out the donor information. Please provide a check to Ron Johnson or start the planting process.
